Chelsea's Fab Farm was a fun project to quilt, filled with charming farm animals, sunflowers, bees, and plenty of thoughtful piecing details. With so many individual elements competing for attention, the quilting needed to add texture and movement without overwhelming the quilt top.
For this project, Chelsea selected the Summer Breeze edge-to-edge design. The Summer Breeze design adds gentle texture across the open spaces while allowing the farm animals, flowers, and bees to remain the stars of the show. - the animals that make this pattern so recognizable.
One of the things that makes this quilt unique is the thread choice. Rather than using my more typical Glide thread, Chelsea opted for WonderFil PolyMatte 109 Clamshell, one of WonderFil's newer matte-finish threads. The reduced sheen creates a softer, more rustic appearance compared to the shinier, more modern look of traditional trilobal polyester threads. It's a subtle difference, but one that noticeably changes the overall feel of the finished quilt.
The soft sage green background ties the entire quilt together and provides a beautiful canvas for both the piecing and quilting.
This was one of those projects where every element worked together naturally. Between the playful Elizabeth Hartman design, the matte thread choice, and the soft movement created by the quilting, the finished quilt has a cozy, welcoming feel that suits the farm theme perfectly. 🐄🌻🐑🧵
