This beautiful Thrive quilt (pattern by Suzy Quilts) was made by Heather as a gift for her sister, featuring a thoughtfully chosen palette of blues and purples accented with cheerful pops of orange.
For the quilting, Heather selected the Marmalade edge-to-edge design. Its playful swirls and bubbly movement soften the strong geometric lines of the Thrive pattern while adding texture and visual interest throughout the quilt. In one of those delightful quilting coincidences, the perfect orange thread for the binding on her project turned out to be Glide Marmalade. Neither Heather nor I realized at the time that the thread color and quilting design shared the same wonderfully unique name, making it feel like the project was meant to come together exactly as it did.
Thread selection played an important role in bringing the entire project together. I used Glide 40wt Chestnut on the top, a warm taupe-orange shade that picks up the quilt's warmer tones while remaining versatile across the different fabrics. The slightly darker value allows the quilting to blend beautifully into the navy and purple piecing while becoming more visible in the seafoam negative space, creating texture and movement without competing with the bold geometry of the Thrive pattern. On the back, a finer Glide 60wt Tuscan bobbin thread provided excellent stitch balance while remaining soft and unobtrusive against the light cream backing fabric.
One of my favorite details is the colorful speckled backing. The cream background allows the Marmalade quilting design to take center stage, while the scattered blue, pink, gold, and teal speckles add a playful element. Eagle-eyed viewers may notice that one of the photos was taken from underneath the longarm frame.
I regularly inspect the backing throughout the process to ensure the fabric remains smooth, stitch formation is consistent, and tension remains balanced. Taking the time to check both sides of the quilt as I work is one of the many small details that helps ensure the finished backing looks just as beautiful as the front.
To complete the project, I attached the binding, to the front on the longarm, saving Heather from having to wrangle this nearly king -sized through her domestic machine.
The result is a quilt full of thoughtful color choices, meaningful details, and carefully considered quilting decisions, creating a heartfelt gift that celebrates both the maker and the recipient. From the dramatic geometric piecing on the front to the beautifully stitched speckled backing, every element works together to create a quilt that is as lovely to examine up close as it is to admire from across the room. ✨🧵🍊
